Terence Osmond

Most of my work involves the use of photography and other mechanical devices such as planes, boats, and automobiles.  This allows for an exploration of concepts and development of the image that would otherwise not be possible.

Early Work – I began painting at the age of ten. My early training was heavily influenced by the classics. Much of my images were based on the figure and I had extensive training in anatomy and life drawing. In my early twenties I began to paint my first “series”, based on a shipwreck of the Greek freighter the “Dominator” located off the Palos Verdes coast in Southern California. These paintings were hard edged, color studies of close cropped mechanical structure that had a very organic feel because of the way the steel was torn and rusted.  In my mid twenties I began exploring the use of common images (ocean, portraits, still life's, etc.) to see if I could do something unique and exciting with them. I also began exploring what was referred to at that time a Hyper-Realist style. The earliest of these images were Ocean  paintings, which began in a more Expressionist  mode then developed to a more Realist style. These were fairly large paintings (60"x72"), as much of my work tended to be at that time.

Video Series - In 1979 I began a series of paper pieces, (and some on canvas) which were based on images seen on television. I worked on this series on and off, through the mid 80's.  The images I chose came from commercials, old movies, news programs and weekly shows. To develop the images I mainly used horizontal lines to emphasize the scan lines of the cathode ray. During this time I also worked on a series of drawings based on nature, using the horizontal line as a foundation for the image.

Aerial Landscape - Through the invention of flight we have been able to view the earth from above. With the advent of photography, record it! The development of Aerial Photography began in the 1850's when balloons with cameras attached were sent aloft. Today we have satellites taking pictures of the earth and other planets from great altitudes. It was because of these modern technologies I was able to develop Aerial Landscape Painting. This new way of looking at landscape seemed to me a logical progression from the traditional perspective of landscape we have been accustomed to. Around 1980 I was flying with my sister who had just received her pilot’s license and started taking photographs of the surrounding Los Angeles area. I started the Aerial Series the same year using these photos as a reference for the paintings. These early paintings were at first realistic then latter developed to a more expressionistic and abstracted style. As these images evolved. I felt like the earth was being torn, gouged and tortured and tried to reflect this feeling in the paintings. I painted Aerials for about 6 years and completed over one hundred and twenty acrylic on canvas pieces and hundreds of works on paper.

Aboriginal Innuendo - The title is a play on words. In 1982 I started the Aboriginal Series, which emphasized color, composition and form at their most basic and dynamic levels.  These images were expressionistic departures, from close-cropped views of different plant forms (sometimes with a little hint of human form thrown in).  I started this series while still doing the Aerials.

Botanical Expressionism - In the late Eighties I worked on a series of expressionistic paintings whose primary source of imagery was the many different plants I had growing in my garden.

Desert Landscape - For the past few years I have been painting landscape as a subject. Until now my main treatment of this genre has been through the "Aerial" viewpoint. The "Desert Landscape" was a series that developed as a result of moving to the Nevada desert. I returned to a recognizable image with a more impressionistic paint surface and visual perspective.

Lake Mead Series -
I have always enjoyed painting water and rocks. With this series I have returned to a subject that still fascinates me. Lake Mead is such a strange paradox, here you have this very large body of water in the middle of a desert and still hardly anything grows there. All these images were taken from a boat looking towards shore.

Drive-By Series – Since we were children we all have spent countless hours in the car watching the scenery go by. This series of Drive-By Landscape Paintings is a result of this common and contemporary way in which we tend to view nature. We have become use to the bombardment of rapid fire images from Television and Film as it is in the “Drive-By Landscape”.  I take a single frame out of context and choose to examine it, can we even bear to look at the still image anymore? This is landscape through time with the visual distortion of the foreground and the background becoming the more focused. A reversal of the normal view of landscape as forms blend, blur and constantly change.

Today – As a child growing up in Newfoundland, Canada I had the great fortune of being able to grow up in an environment of total freedom. I spent as much time as possible exploring the North Woods and have always been fascinated by nature. Today my work continues to be heavily influenced by my natural surroundings and I’m still using landscape and plant forms as the basis of my work.
